What Is Watchdives LumeCore? Our 3D Lume Technology Explained

A watch can look impressively bright right after being exposed to light. But for us, the more useful question is what happens a few hours later.

Can you still read the time clearly?

That is the idea behind Watchdives LumeCore.

What Is LumeCore?

LumeCore is Watchdives’ 3D lume construction system.

Instead of relying on a thin surface layer of luminous material, LumeCore uses raised, three-dimensional markers that allow more lume to be built into the dial.

This creates two practical benefits:

  • more luminous material within each marker

  • greater visual depth in daylight

LumeCore describes the way the lume is constructed and integrated into the dial. It is not a proprietary luminous chemical compound developed by Watchdives.

Why We Focused on Lume Volume

Lume performance depends on more than the name of the luminous material.

Marker size, thickness, surface area, charging conditions and dial construction all affect how the watch performs in darkness.

With LumeCore, one of the main design goals is simple: increase useful lume volume without making the dial feel oversized or unbalanced.

A thicker marker can hold more luminous material than a conventional thin printed layer. More material gives the marker greater capacity to absorb and gradually release light.

That does not mean the goal is maximum brightness at the start.

We are more interested in useful visibility later in the night, after the initial glow has already faded.

LumeCore Base

LumeCore Base is the standard version of the system.

It uses approximately 0.5 mm thick 3D luminous markers.

This thickness was chosen to give the dial more lume volume while keeping the marker proportions clean and balanced.

Under suitable charging and viewing conditions, LumeCore Base is designed to provide useful nighttime visibility for around 6 hours.

Watchdives EXD-40

The Watchdives EXD-40 uses LumeCore Base.

Its 3D lume markers are designed to add depth to the dial without making the hour markers feel too heavy.

In daylight, the markers give the dial a more dimensional appearance. In darkness, the additional lume volume helps maintain visibility for longer.

LumeCore X

LumeCore X takes the same construction idea further.

It uses approximately 0.8 mm thick 3D luminous structures, allowing a greater volume of lume material to be used.

The thicker construction gives the dial a deeper, more sculpted appearance and is designed for longer nighttime visibility.

Under suitable conditions, LumeCore X is designed to remain usefully visible for around 8 hours.

Watchdives WD0019 Premier

The Watchdives WD0019 Premier uses LumeCore X.

Its thicker 3D lume structures were developed for customers who place more emphasis on extended nighttime readability.

The added height also gives the dial a stronger three-dimensional character during the day.

These figures are practical design targets rather than fixed laboratory guarantees.

Real-world performance will vary depending on the light source, charging time, ambient conditions and the viewer’s eyesight.

How Is LumeCore Different From Traditional Lume Application?

Many watch dials use printed or filled lume applied in a relatively thin layer.

That approach can still perform very well.

LumeCore simply takes a different approach.

Instead of keeping the luminous material close to the dial surface, the marker is built upward. This makes it possible to increase lume volume while also creating a more dimensional dial.

The difference is therefore not only how bright the watch appears, but also how the luminous material is physically built into the design.

More Lume Is Not Always Better

There is a limit to how far lume thickness should go.

If markers become too large or too tall, they can change the proportions of the dial and make the watch feel visually heavy.

For that reason, LumeCore is not based on one fixed thickness for every model.

Each dial is treated separately.

The marker size, height and shape are adjusted to suit the proportions and character of the watch.

That is also why LumeCore Base and LumeCore X exist as different approaches rather than one universal specification.

Which Watchdives Watches Use LumeCore?

Current examples include:

Watchdives EXD-40 Automatic
Uses LumeCore Base with approximately 0.5 mm 3D luminous markers.

Watchdives WD0019 Premier
Uses LumeCore X with approximately 0.8 mm 3D luminous structures.

Future Watchdives models may use different LumeCore specifications depending on the dial design and intended use.

Why We Developed LumeCore

For us, lume should be treated as part of the dial construction, not just as a finishing detail added at the end.

That means thinking about the marker itself:

its depth, shape, lume volume and how it works with the rest of the dial.

LumeCore came from that approach.

The goal is straightforward:

build more usable lume into the watch while keeping the dial balanced, readable and visually clean.

That is the direction we plan to keep developing across future Watchdives models.
