The Seiko NH35 Movement: A Reliable Choice for Affordable Dive Watches

The Seiko NH35 Movement: A Reliable Choice for Affordable Dive Watches

The NH35 is a TMI automatic mechanical movement with hand-winding, hacking seconds and a date display. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz) and has a specified running duration of more than 41 hours when fully wound. TMI's factory static-rate specification is -20 to +40 seconds per day under stated test conditions, not a guarantee of the daily error of every finished watch.

Jump to NH35 specifications, accuracy and daily-rate records, winding and date setting, or current NH35 watches. Historical model examples are labelled separately below; a familiar model name does not guarantee that a current version uses NH35.

What Is the Seiko NH35 Movement?

The NH35, often searched for as the Seiko NH35 movement, is an automatic mechanical calibre in TMI's NH-series lineup. It combines three-hand timekeeping, a date mechanism, automatic and manual winding, and stop seconds. An NH35-powered watch sold under another brand is not a Seiko-branded finished watch; judge the complete model's construction and specification separately. Its main ownership features are:

  • Automatic & Hand-Winding: The NH35 is self-winding but also allows manual winding for added convenience.

  • Hacking Function: This means the second hand stops when you pull out the crown, allowing for precise time-setting.

  • Power Reserve: Approximately 41 hours, making it a reliable choice for daily wear.

  • Durability: The NH35 is widely used in robust watches, but water resistance and suitability for diving depend on the complete watch construction, not the movement alone.

Why Choose a Watch with NH35 Movement?

  1. Reliability: The NH35 movement is known for its robustness and long lifespan, making it a favorite among enthusiasts.

  2. Accuracy: TMI specifies a static rate of -20 to +40 seconds per day under its stated test conditions. This is a specification range, not an average error, a chronometer certification or a promise that every finished watch will keep the same daily rate on the wrist. The measurement conditions and an example of reading daily error appear below.

  3. Affordability: Many automatic watches featuring the NH35 provide excellent value compared to Swiss movements.

  4. Versatility: It is used in everything from dress watches to diving watches, proving its adaptability.

NH35 Specifications: What the Numbers Describe

The official TMI lineup identifies 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour (3Hz), three hands, a date display and stop seconds. TMI lists Japan or Malaysia as origins; the calibre name alone does not establish where an individual movement was made.

Specification NH35A reference
Winding Automatic and manual
Frequency / jewels 21,600 vph / 3Hz / 24 jewels
Movement diameter 27.40mm; 29.36mm with the dial-holding spacer
Movement height 5.32mm
Specified running duration More than 41 hours when fully wound, checked dial-up
Static rate specification -20 to +40 seconds per day under TMI's test conditions

The dimensions come from TMI's NH35A specification and drawing. They describe the movement, not the watch case diameter or finished-watch thickness. Hand height, dial, crystal, case back and water-resistance construction still affect the complete watch; these dimensions are not a drop-in compatibility guarantee.

NH35 Accuracy: Factory Range vs Your Watch

The TMI NH3-series technical guide defines static-rate testing 10–60 minutes after full winding, with the calendar not operating, in dial-up, 9-o'clock-up and 6-o'clock-up positions. A single timegrapher reading and a multi-day wrist record answer different questions; neither alone establishes how every NH35 watch performs.

For your own record, compare with the same reference clock at the same time each day, without resetting the hands between readings. Note winding and wear conditions. As a calculation example, a watch that is 8 seconds fast at the first reading and 23 seconds fast exactly 24 hours later gained 15 seconds over that day—not 23. This is an illustration, not a measured Watchdives result. Share a consistent multi-day record with support before deciding that regulation or service is needed.

Winding, Setting the Date and Hacking Seconds

In the TMI operating instructions, clockwise crown rotation in the normal winding position adds power. The first click is for date correction; the second is for time setting and stops the seconds hand. For a screw-down crown, release it according to the watch's own instructions first and secure it again after setting.

Do not use quick date correction while the hands indicate 9:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m. TMI warns that doing so can cause a malfunction. Establish the indicated time and AM/PM before correcting the date. Do not force a resistant crown or attempt an internal repair from this guide.

Automatic winding does not mean unlimited off-wrist running. The published reserve assumes full winding; a partially wound watch can stop sooner. That is different from a quartz watch needing a battery. Follow the instructions supplied with the specific watch rather than treating the movement's laboratory winding procedure as a daily ownership requirement.
