If you like the Timex Marlin Chronograph’s vintage styling but want a sapphire crystal, the Thorn T010 Sapphire Crystal version and Watchdives WD0526 are two options to compare. Both have smaller listed case diameters than the 40mm Marlin, but their dial designs and calendar displays differ.
This is a specification-based store-selection guide, not a hands-on review. Watchdives sells the two alternatives. The Timex reference here is specifically the Marlin Chronograph Tachymeter TW2W10400, a battery-powered quartz chronograph with domed acrylic. Other Marlin models can have different specifications.
The trade-off comes up in a recent buyer discussion: the shopper liked the Marlin for smart-casual occasions but wanted alternatives because of its acrylic crystal. That is a preference this comparison addresses, not evidence that the Timex is poorly made.

Compare diameter together with case length and bracelet geometry. The published heights do not all specify the same measurement basis, so they are not a controlled thickness comparison. Water-resistance figures are listing specifications, not results of a comparative test.
Keep the Marlin if acrylic and a date suit you
Acrylic has a practical trade-off: Timex describes it as more prone to scratches, but impact-resistant and polishable. Sapphire is worth considering when scratch resistance is your priority; it does not make a watch scratchproof or establish better impact resistance.
The Marlin also keeps its silver-tone dial, distinctive markers and date window. If those details are the reason you like it, the alternatives below will not reproduce the same watch. Neither pictured alternative provides its visible calendar display. All three are battery-powered, so this choice is not a move from quartz to automatic.
Thorn T010: a light dial with an external bezel
The T010 White Dial – Black Bezel / Sapphire Crystal was available at US$139. It pairs contrasting subdials with a 37mm case and an external black bezel, giving it a different, sportier outline than the Marlin.
The same listing offers Mineral Glass versions. Choose the Sapphire Crystal option explicitly; the lower-priced mineral configuration does not meet that requirement. Sapphire versions of White Dial – Red Bezel and Black Dial were also available at US$139 each.
WD0526: a dark dial and sapphire as standard
The WD0526 Vintage Matte Black was available at US$139. Its dark dial reverses the Marlin’s light-dial emphasis. The 38.5mm case comes with a steel bracelet using push-pin links and a five-hole adjustable clasp, rather than an on-the-fly clasp.
Lapis Lazuli and Black Aventurine versions were also available at US$145 each. Black Onyx was unavailable at the check. The two photographs are separate product images, not a common-scale fit comparison.
Choose by the details you want to keep
Choose the Marlin for its specific styling, visible date and polishable acrylic. Consider the T010 sapphire configuration if you want a light dial and accept the external bezel. Consider the WD0526 if you prefer the dark-dial look and its documented bracelet setup. A crystal preference alone cannot establish finishing, comfort or long-term reliability.
